Mechanical Engineer - Lean

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

We are looking for a hands-on Mechanical Engineer who enjoys solving practical problems, improving equipment, and making things work better every day. The successful candidate will spend most of their time on the factory floor working alongside operators, artisans, production, and maintenance teams to improve safety, reliability, productivity, and quality across our corrugated converting operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Own the mechanical performance and continuous improvement of the value stream production lines.
  • Design, build, modify and improve manufacturing equipment to eliminate waste and improve performance.
  • Lead Moonshine projects using practical, low-cost engineering solutions before pursuing major capital expenditure.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify equipment, reduce maintenance effort, improve reliability and remove unnecessary complexity.
  • Work closely with OEMs while remaining willing to challenge conventional solutions where better alternatives exist.
  • Design mechanical components, assemblies and machine modifications using sound engineering principles.
  • Specify motors, gearboxes, drives, bearings, structural components and mechanical systems appropriate to the application.
  • Scope, cost and execute engineering improvement projects from concept through commissioning.
  • Support installation, commissioning and optimisation of new equipment.
  • Work with production and maintenance teams to troubleshoot equipment failures and eliminate root causes.
  • Develop and share Yokoten opportunities by standardising successful improvements across multiple lines and sites.
  • Ensure all engineering modifications comply with safety, legal and engineering standards.
  • Maintain engineering documentation, drawings and technical standards where required.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Mechatronic Engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years manufacturing or industrial engineering experience.
  • Experience within corrugated packaging, FMCG, automotive, mining, manufacturing or similar production environments required.
  • Exposure to conveyors, gearboxes, motors, pneumatics, hydraulics and automated machinery.
  • Experience with machine design, equipment modifications and mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Experience leading or supporting continuous improvement projects.
  • CAD experience (SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD or similar) advantageous.
  • Exposure to Lean Manufacturing, TPM, SMED or Continuous Improvement methodologies advantageous.
